Autumn is a fantastic season to visit Tuscany! In September and October you can enjoy the tranquility after an hot August and also there are fewer tourists on the way... Everything is more relaxed that's why this is the ideal season for families with children, couples, friends or with your pet. You can have a day trip, relaxing by the pool or just enjoing the tranquility of the sea.
The days are getting shorter and it's cooler at night, but the daytime temperatures rise above 20-25 C. Now you can really recharge your batteries without having to suffer from the heat. Ideal temperatures to enjoy cities like Florence, Siena... but also to catch some sun in uncrowded beaches.
What to do:
At the beginning of September, begins the harvest and a visit to the wineries is worthwhile; everywhere you will see baskets full of grapes and it smells of must...so great!
Immediately after the grape harvest, begins the olive harvest ( mid- October). The olives are usually picked by hand and placed into boxes. In order to guarantee the best quality, the olives should arrive at the olive mill within 24 hours. It is an experience to be here during the pressing of the olive oil and to taste it fresh, ideal with a slice of Tuscan bread … a pleasure! There are smells and tastes that you will never forget.
Autumn is also the perfect season to enjoy the local cuisine, such as mushrooms, roasted chestnuts and truffle dishes. The Italians like to eat out at the weekend; during the week, the restaurants are usually not so well visited .. you will get a great service too!
This is also the time of the "Sagra" -a culinary village festival- probably one of the more popular local events. A Sagra lasts one or more consecutive weekends and is dedicated to aspecific local food, for example, you can find the cherries Sagra in May, the truffle Sagra in November, the chestnuts Sagra in October and so on..The food is cooked by the local people on site..ready to taste it?
Festa del tartufo (Exhibition and market of the white truffle) takes place during the last three weekends in November in San Miniato alto. The most important exhibition and market in Tuscany; one of the most eagerly-awaited by lovers of the precious tuber. It's a unique celebration … ..and everything revolves around the tartufo.
Conclusion: who plans his Tuscany vacation in September or October, can be almost certain that a Sagra weekend is there!
